A background in photojournalism and documentary photography and the insights gained from the numerous places he has visited brought him a keen understanding of social life. Edy, who believes that photography isn't merely recording visuals but telling a story in a frame, envisages combining this knowledge with his sense of aesthetic value in photography.
Besides taking pictures, Edy also conducts photo documentary and photojournalism workshops to groom Indonesia's new generation of photographers. He was invited by World Press Photo Amsterdam in 2006 to join its training for trainers to develop his teaching ability.
Edy graduated from University of Jember, majoring in English Literature. He learnt photojournalism at Antara Photojournalism Gallery in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 1998, and was as a participant in the Asian photojournalism workshop held by World Press Photo Foundation in 2002. Edy started his career in photojournalism as a stringer for Agence-France Presse in 1998 and worked for Getty Images news service before embarking as a freelance photographer.
